Search engines
What search engine(s) do you use?

Have you ever used a different one other than Google, MSN or Yahoo? (why? How?)

How many search engines can you name?

How do you think search engines Format (form) the information they present to you?

To find out more about search engines, look at the information given at the University of California at Berkeley’s Library website:
http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/SearchEngines.html

What does it say about how useful Google is?

Why is it good to get a second opinion?

What other search engines do they recommend?

Look below the chart and find out how search engines work.

What is a “spider”?

What is the “invisible web”?

Look at this website which suggests using search engines according to your specific needs. http://www.noodletools.com/debbie/literacies/information/5locate/adviceengine.html

According to this site, which search engine(s) is(are) suggested to find information for children?

Here is another search engine that you might find useful today, in this class or in the future (for example when looking for a job or some specific information).

Now, let me lead you through a “click-search”. Follow the instructions carefully, step by step.
Look at the Magazines search engine under the News and Media section (make sure to scroll below the advertisements – thank you Google!). When on the new page, skip the ads again and find Magazine Boy.

How many magazines are listed about black and white photography?

What picture is on the cover of this magazine?

To answer this question you have to click again on the name of the magazine which appears on the Photo Magazine Topic page. (you may have to click again to get to the magazine cover page).

Optional: If you’ve made it this far, in the last minutes of class, go to the UCP library site and find the e-journals. Try to find Science Direct database and then Sage publishing. Browse the different titles that are available to research about Communications, Marketing, Businesses, Entrepreneurs etc.
